Description
Men are busy replacing old railway track with new in this painting. The area is Northam, a suburb of Southampton UK, and shows the works at 'Mount Pleasant' crossing. The road level crossing surface has been taken up leaving the tracks exposed. Some track from this four track junction has been removed and new ballast placed in ready to accept new track. Some new track can be seen on a mobile railway crane, approaching the site. The workmen will help manoeuvre the track panel in to place as it is lowered. In the background can be seen part of the Southampton Skyline, including the 'Saints' stadium, Ocean village flats and the gas holders at Northam.
The painting is based on a number of photographs taken a few years previously, to create one composition to use for a painting reference.
Painted in oils on a mounting board, sized at 33” x 23, during a residency at the Southampton city art gallery which took place in the spring of 2022. The public were able to see progress in person on the painting.
