Description
Messerschmitt Bf 109 G
Gustavs
One of the later variants of the Bf109 series the G was a formidable aircraft designed to fulfil a variety of combat roles. Serving with many of the JG units of the Luftwaffe and well capable of holding its own with the many Spitfire and P51 variants the Gustav was a firm favourite with Luftwaffe pilots. Awkward on the ground with its splayed and narrow undercarriage the Gustav had a top speed of just on 400mph and a service ceiling of 39,000 ft. The Bf 109 series was the most prolific of all WW2 aircraft with some 34,000 produced.
Seen here in a most effective late WW2 camouflage scheme a pair of Gustavs carry out a winter interdictor sortie in Northern Europe.
